Our methodology

Every trading journal on this site is scored the same way, against the same five criteria. Here is exactly how we do it - so you can weigh our conclusions for yourself.

The five scoring criteria

Value for money

25%

Total cost at the tier a real trader actually needs - weighed against everything you get for it. Free tiers and honest, no-surprise pricing score higher.

Broker auto-sync

25%

How many brokers connect natively, how reliable the sync is, and whether CSV import cleanly covers the rest. Manual-only tools are penalized.

Analytics depth

20%

Whether the platform goes beyond vanity metrics into expectancy, profit factor, per-strategy and time-based analysis - and how customizable the dashboard is.

Ease of use

20%

How quickly a new user gets from sign-up to insight. Clean interfaces that surface the right numbers beat cluttered ones, however powerful.

Market coverage

10%

Support for stocks, options, futures and crypto in one journal, and how well multi-leg or multi-asset trades are handled.

How we test

Wherever possible we use each platform with real trade data - connecting a live broker or importing an actual trade history - rather than judging from a marketing page. We look at the day-to-day workflow: how fast trades import, how the dashboard reads, and whether the analytics genuinely change how you'd trade.

Scores are our own weighted assessment, not third-party certified test results. Pricing and feature availability change frequently; we re-verify the table figures on each update (last verified July 2026) and always recommend confirming current details on the vendor's own website before you buy.

How we stay honest

Some outbound links on this site are affiliate or partner links, meaning we may earn a commission if you sign up - at no extra cost to you. This is how the site funds its testing. Crucially, commercial relationships never change a score or a ranking. A product's position is determined solely by the criteria above. You can read more on our disclosure page.

Updates

The trading-journal market moves quickly. We revisit these rankings regularly and update scores as platforms ship new features or change pricing. If you spot something out of date, let us know at hello@besttradingjournal.com.
